Foreign Language Department
The Foreign Language Department supports communicative proficiency, based on the development of the four language skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking, as well as cultural awareness. The department offers four years of study in Latin, and five years of study in French, German, and Spanish.
Foreign Language News
Homework Policy: Each student is expected to complete homework, in all foreign language classes, to reinforce and support classroom learning. Foreign language teachers assign homework in accordance with the Foreign Language Department Homework Policy. Homework assignments are designed to help the students further develop their language skills and cultural awareness.
The Importance of Speaking Another Language: While the practical benefits of speaking more than one language, in an rea of globalization, are clear and widely noted, science is beginning to find some less obvious benefits, as well.
Foreign Language National Honor Societies: Each foreign language at WRHS has its own honor society affiliated with the national organizations: Societé Honoraire de Français, Delta Epsilon Phi, National Junior Classical League, and Sociedad honoraria hispánica. Students must meet the criteria established by the national organization to be accepted into their respective honor society. Inductions for the 2011-2012 school year were held Nov. 3 in the WRHS auditorium. The Induction Ceremony Program contains a list of all new and returning members of the WRHS foreign language honor societies.
Online Resource for Spanish 3 CP/CPA Students: The Spanish 3 CP/CPA textbook, Descubre 3, is available online, as are a series of activities for those students. Students should get a username and password from their Spanish 3 teacher.
Foreign Language National Exams: Every year foreign language students at WRHS have the opportunity to compete in a foreign language national exam. These exams are offered at every level of study and take place after school. Students are encouraged to participate and may contact their teacher for more information.
National French Award: Gregory Michael Wong, Class of '11, was awarded a 2010-2011 American Association of Teachers of French Outstanding Senior in French Award. This award is made annually to a graduating senior who has demonstrated excellence in the study of French as well as exceptional commitment to the French language and the many cultures where it is spoken.
International Club: This club was established to support foreign exchange students and to offer WRHS students the opportunity to learn about the variety of foreign cultures represented at WRHS. Club activities have included International Cafe Night, a celebration of Mardi Gras, and field trips to area attractions. For more information, contact the foreign language department head.

Classics Day at Holy Cross: The WRHS Latin Club took part in Classics Day at Holy Cross in spring 2011, winning one award and gamely competing in the Chariot Race. At right, members of the club pose with their Roman chariot.

Foreign Language Course Offerings To
graduate from WRHS, students must complete at least 10
credits in foreign languages. Students must successfully complete two
consecutive years in the same language. The Foreign Language Program Guide lists and describes all courses, sequences and prerequisites.
