SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING "PINK SLIME"
The Wachusett Regional Foodservice Department is aware of the recent news regarding Lean Finely Textured Beef ( LFTB) otherwise known as “pink slime”. We have received information from the providers of beef products to our District. The statements submitted from these vendors indicate that they DO NOT use the process involved. We are also in contact with Dept. of Education receiving any updates they may have regarding this issue.
The District will make every effort to report to the public any updates on beef products that will be used for the purpose of meals for the National School Lunch Program at the Wachusett schools. The District continues to use best standard practices for handling of all food. All staff are trained in ServSafe and follow strict regulations for food handling.
The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is governed by federal (United States Department of Agriculture) and state (Department of Elementary and Secondary Education) regulations, and all menus must meet the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The menu planning system required by the NSLP is designed to provide children with approximately one-third of the key nutrients and calories they need according to the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA's).
Our lunch/breakfast (high school only) is served as Offer vs Serve which means that we offer choices that are broken into components consisting of milk, fruits, vegetables and the entree. The student must choose an entree and has the choice of taking all of the side choices.
