Davis Hill Physical Education
At Davis Hill our Physical Education curriculum focuses on movement education, and our Mission is to enable each student to strive to do his/her best, by creating an atmosphere that is safe, respectful and challenging, each student will realize the social and physical benefits of sports and recreation
In Kindergarten, coming to P.E. every week enables the children to work on their gross motor skills and social interactions which support the learning process.
In grades 1-2 we continue to stress the rules:
- We will be safe.
- We will keep our hands and our feet to ourselves.
- We will respect each other.
We will begin to apply some of the motor concepts that were learned in kindergarten to skill development and rudimentary game play. We will continue to practice balance and body control and begin to identify the benefits and changes that occur with regular exercise.
In 3-5 we will put the skills together to perform sequences leading to game play and dance routines. We will start to develop stategies for game play and be able to follow the rules and accept the referee's decisions. We will discuss fitness goals and the overall health benefits of a good work-out routine. The skills learned for problem solving and organization learned in the P.E. class should be carried over to the playground, recess and in neighborhood play.
If you are unfamiliar with "Taps", it is my rubric for participation while in the P.E. class. At the end of each class the children line up on the line and I go behind them and tap them on the shoulder. Four taps are the best, one tap is the worst.
4 Taps-Demonstrates understanding, best effort, cooperative and assisting, performs skill accurately.
3 Taps-Progressing toward understanding, best effort most of the time, cooperative, inquisitive, performs skill rudimentarily.
2 Taps-Some understanding, minimum effort, off task behavior, non- cooperative, needs skill improvement.
1 Tap-Shows no desire to understand, effort not directed appropriately, interferes with the learning process, may have received a time-out, skills are not practiced or developed.
I do insist that students come to my class prepared. They will need a pair of flat soled sneakers that are tied tightly on their feet. Girls need to wear a skort , shorts or pants on gym days. Boys are encouraged to wear baggy clothes so their movement is not restricted. Each time a student comes to class unprepared they will receive only 3 taps. Students grades are based on the daily score they receive.
I will use a variety of assessments ranging from standardized fitness tests, observation, peer assessment, self-assessmant and sometimes written exams.I follow the WRSD P.E. Curriculum, State Health Framework and National Association for Sports and Physical Education's frameworks and benchmarks. Currently I am working on a new report card which will better reflect the progress that your child has made.
Some specific concepts/programs that we will be working on are:
Target Heart Rate
Fitness Goals
Effective Effort
New Report Cards
Dance Routines
Turkey Trot
Challenge Course
On Occasion I recruit volunteers to work in the gym. Participants must be CORI'd. Please see Mrs. Johnson in the office to begin this process as it may take up to 8 weeks and then is good for three years. If you are interested in helping out in the gym please contact us.
Again, I look forward to working with your children this year and please feel free to contact me with any suggestions or concerns.
