Feature Teacher:
Betsy Wood has been teaching math at CTMS for 13 years. She has taught every grade level and every math course. She served as Yearbook advisor for 6 years and began the FIRST Lego League program. She grew up in Newport County, RI. She is the only member of her family who has moved more than 5 miles away from the coast, having moved to Central Massachusetts 20 years ago. Growing up, Betsy had enjoyed every type of dance from ballet and ballroom, to jazz and even square dancing (a member of the Sakonnet Stompers). She even used to sew her own costumes! Upon graduation from Lesley University, she immediately took a job in Bronx, NY as an ESL and high school Math Teacher. She loved traveling all over Manhattan by train with her students (favorite trip was to the 100th Anniversary Celebration of the Statue of Liberty, 1986). In her first permanent public school position, she taught Life Science, Physical Science and Health. She made the switch over to math in the early 1990s. Thanks to nominations from former Central Tree students, she has been included in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers twice! When she’s not spending time with her family outdoors, she serves as the Director for one of Worcester’s Emergency Food Pantries (Loaves & Fishes). Working with the hunger relief effort is something Betsy is passionate about. She also can’t wait for her first trip to Haiti as she is now a registered Britsionary (BLB)! Of any community in which she has ever lived or worked, Mrs. Wood says Rutland has the most community spirit. It’s fitting that the girl who was voted Most School Spirited of her senior class gets to work in such a town.

?
Yes, Mr. Stark wears "mandels" and yes Mr. Stark does not own a television… but don’t judge a book by its cover or better said, a dude by what is on his feet. Mr. Stark grew up in upstate NY in the town of Floyd. While attending middle school and high school (and even into college) he worked on a small dairy farm; driving the hay truck, stacking hay, bailing hay, spreading hay… you get the point. It was his first job and where he actually began to develop his love for woodworking. Much of the farmhouse and barns needed repair and updating and this task was left up to Mr. Stark. Although he did not pursue his woodworking dream in college at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry he did gain the vast majority of science knowledge he still uses to this day. He obtained a degree in wood products engineering, married his best friend from High School, and finally moved out to Littleton, Massachusetts for a job selling hardwood lumber. The lumber thing really wasn’t his shtick, so he decided to make a change for something a little more challenging. After some hard-core studying, a plethora of applications and a job interview in Rutland for a 6th grade science teacher, Mr. Stark made the best move of his life. Even after six years of teaching, his excitement for teaching has not changed. He loves working with his super-fantastic colleagues and loves working with his superb students. As an added bonus, Mr. Stark gets to do one of his favorite sports with the students of CTMS. He has run the Central Tree Mountain Biking Team for 6 years. He still continues to find some time to build custom pieces of furniture and get out on his bike when the trail calls to him.
